LSBDC at ULM launches ‘Shop Small, Shop NELA Selfie Challenge’

Do you like to shop small? Do you like taking selfies? For most the answer is yes, and that means you are who the Louisiana Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) at ULM is looking for.

The LSBDC at ULM has found a way to connect Northeast Louisiana businesses and consumers using social media. The LSBDC at ULM says it’s time to bring businesses together with the palm of your hand by using social media and the hash tag in a new #ShopSmall #SelfieChallenge and especially, #ShopNELA.

“It’s time to unite the business community of Northeast Louisiana so consumers know who they are and entrepreneurs know each other as well for business-to-business partnering,” Virendra Chhikara said, LSBDC at ULM Senior Business Consultant.

The #ShopSmall #SelfieChallenge was announced Friday, August 14 and will be an ongoing initiative to help promote and support small businesses. The LSBDC at ULM also introduced a new hash tag to connect Northeast Louisiana businesses in the social media world, which is #ShopNELA.

The #ShopSmall #SelfieChallenge and the #ShopNELA initiative work together and the LSBDC at ULM aim to create a buzz with the new trendy hash tags.

“We serve 14 parishes in the Northeast Louisiana area, and we truly see this social media connectivity as a true weapon for business growth,” Christina Davis said, LSBDC at ULM Business Consultant.

The social media initiative’s goal is to have consumers take pictures of themselves in local small businesses, use the hash tags #ShopSmall #SelfieChallenge, and #ShopNELA and share those pictures on social media such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

The LSBDC at ULM wants the #ShopSmall #SelfieChallenge to work similar to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that swept the nation in 2014, where individuals shared themselves participating in the challenge using the hash tag and then challenging family and friends to follow after him or her.

Chhikara said he would like to see the Northeast Louisiana area be recognized for supporting and promoting small businesses and more importantly want to see businesses grow and expand because of it.

“It’s just a fun way to help the business community,” Chhikara said. “Our center will be kicking off the first challenge, so be on the lookout because we could be challenging you.”

To participate in the #ShopSmall #SelfieChallenge a social media post should include a picture of the individual in the small business and read as follows:
