Downs credits LSBDC for business success
When a Veteran is in need, most people will do anything to help meet that need. The Louisiana Small Business Development Center (LSBDC) at ULM showed it best when Troy Downs, a 25-year serviceman, reached out in need of business consulting.
Downs started his own business in December of 2001, Downs Enterprise, LLC in Bastrop, La., which focuses on managing, consulting and developing local small businesses through their financials, real estate, and logistics services.
Within the success of the business, Downs has found time to create and manage a foundation. Downs’ foundation pays great attention to his fellow brothers and sisters of the military, by helping them adjust back to civilian lifestyle. This foundation steers veterans on the right path with counseling, preparation for jobs, and help with credit restoration.
Downs has not only built a business for himself, but has developed ways to impact others in the community. He assisted in starting and managing over 25 successful businesses, created over 50 jobs, and counseled over 100 people through the various products Down Enterprise have to offer. During the course of all of these achievements he has found a way to extend a helping hand to veterans in the community. And because of his business and community impact and success, the LSBDC nominated Downs Enterprise for the 2015 Veterans Business Outreach Centers Excellence in Service Award, which was presented by the U.S. Small Business Administration at an awards reception held at the Governor’s Mansion in May.
“The number and efforts of Downs are staggering. Troy has not only built a business for himself, but has developed ways to impact others in the community,” Virendra Chhikara said, LSBDC Senior Business Consultant.
Downs came to the LSBDC in 2012 with a financial management and business development plan, but he wasn’t sure how to execute it successfully.
Back in 1992, a friend told Downs about the LSBDC and how he was able to get his business going. At that time Downs worked in construction, but he always kept an eye on what the LSBDC did due to his future aspirations of owning a business. After a little more than 10 years of running Downs Enterprise, Downs reached out to the LSBDC and said the consulting and advisement Chhikara and the LSBDC gave helped him tremendously.
“The LSBDC strongly advised us on making solid financial plans and decision making,” Downs said. “They are key resources for individuals and/or groups looking to both start or expand economic growth.”
He attended many seminars the LSBDC offered whether they would directly impact his business or not. Downs said just being at the seminars put him in position to learn, get detailed information and most importantly get doctrine.
“It gave us a real lift,” Downs said. “Chhikara set us up with a great profile to present to the banks and the banks were impressed with the work he did and that helped us go from renting an office to buying offices.”
“If you’re looking for real business growth I encourage you to attend the LSBDC seminars and bring a pen, paper and an open mind,” Downs said. “Focus on the seminars, stay with it and keep in touch with the consultants often.”
